Earlier this week, retired Navy officer Christopher Bradley received a specially adapted home in Jacksonville, Florida, through the nonprofit Helping a Hero. On Tuesday, the organization, along with other partners, honored his service with a “Welcome Home” ceremony, where he expressed deep gratitude for the custom-built house designed to meet his needs.
A Florida native, Bradley enlisted in the Navy in 2003 and served as a Ship Serviceman before being deployed to Iraq as a customs officer. In 2007, he suffered severe injuries, including a spinal cord injury and a traumatic brain injury, which significantly impacted his mobility. He was medically retired in 2009 as a Petty Officer 3rd Class.
His home was built as part of the 100 Homes Challenge, an effort backed by Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris, who pledged to fund 25% of the next 100 homes. J.P. Lane, a fellow veteran and past recipient of an adapted home, helped organize Bradley’s ceremony and spoke about the life-changing impact of these homes. The vet says the gift of an accessible home gives him greater freedom and independence.
