ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — It’s that time of year. Hurricane season is right around the corner, and it’s not too early to start preparing.

After updated modeling by the National Hurricane Center, the Emergency Management team in St. Johns County said they made changes this year that point toward better data and better evacuation zones.
On Monday Action News Jax Kennedy Dendy was given a walk-through of what you residents can expect.
Joe Giammanco is St. Johns County’s Director of Emergency Management.
“People on the coasts -- a little bit along the intercoastal and some along the St. Johns River will see some changes,” Giammanco said. “The majority of the county has not changed.”
Giammanco said now is the time to check your zone before this hurricane season starts -- not in the middle of the season.
“Especially with the new evacuation zones, just because you have been in a zone for a while -- it could have changed,” Giammanco said.
Transportation can be arranged for those in need of special assistance, but it’s important that you make arrangements sooner than later.
“You have your A through F zones as you get along the coast you’ll have more of an A zone,” Giammanco said. “Obviously that impact is going to be greater. As you move more west, the evacuation zone is lower and lower.”

“We’re about 30 days out from the start of the hurricane season, so now’s the time to be prepared,” Giammanco said.
