JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A new class of AmeriCorps members will spend their “gap year” serving students in Duval County Public Schools. Ranging beween the ages of 18 and 25, City Year AmeriCorps members participate in workforce opportunities throughout Northeast Florida. Described as young idealists, these members will provide third through ninth grade students in under-resourced schools social, emotional and academic support; efforts they say will help to develop problem-solving, decision-making, leadership and verbal communication skills.
As American school districts face teacher staffing shortages, these young leaders will serve for one year in 11 schools throughout Duval County — “supporting students and strengthening school communities.”
“These young leaders are stepping up to serve in our school community at a time where students and teachers alike need support, perhaps more than ever before,” said Allishia Bauman, Senior Vice President and Executive Director of City Year Jacksonville. “We are inspired by their drive as mentors to make a difference in the lives of children, and how our members thrive in our program developing leadership skills necessary to becoming the community leaders of tomorrow.”
Working in tandem with the National Partnership for Student Success, this year’s City Year AmeriCorps members will be part of a new three-year education initiative to help students deal with the impact of COVID-19.
“The work City Year Jacksonville does to support students and teachers is vital to the success of young people in the face of extraordinary challenges,” said Bill Ferry, Senior Director of Government and External Affairs, Comcast.
City Year Jacksonville remains active in seeking additional members during the 2022- 2023 school year. Members receive a bi-weekly stipend and are eligible for educations awards, scholarship opportunities and career placement support.
The deadline to enroll to serve in October is September 27.
Noted as a proud member of the AmeriCorps national service network, City Year is supported by AmeriCorps, local school districts and private philanthropy. City Year partners with public schools in 29 communities across the U.S. and through international affiliates in the U.K. and South Africa.
