A new SunPass Savings Program will help Florida’s commuters save money on tolls

Jacksonville, Florida — Governor Ron DeSantis announces a new SunPass Savings Program that will help Florida’s drivers who commute often per month.

SunPass customers, who collect over 40 toll charges per month will get a 20 percent discount and those who collect 80 charges will get 25 percent off, according to Governor DeSantis.

“I, as governor, had an ability to provide some immediate relief to ratepayers, and to motorists, based on the amount of surplus that’s been generated,” DeSantis says.

The program begins September 1st and will run for six months until February of 2023. There is no sign-up required, however, you must have a SunPass account that is in good standing.

The Floridian cities that will benefit the most from this savings program are places like Orlando, Miami, and Tampa.

Here, in Northeast Florida, this program applies to the First Coast Expressway as well as parts of I-295′s express lanes.

For example during peak rush hours, for Mandarin drivers heading into Orange Park for work on the West Beltway Northbound, you may take the express lanes over the Buckman Bridge to avoid heavy delays, then over a month, you could easily collect 40 toll charges, as you go to and from work on Monday through Fridays.

Then you would see a 20 percent discount in your SunPass account on the 10th of the following month, making the money in your account balance last longer.

“The potential benefit is about 400-thousand SunPass customers, who are using FDOT and turnpike-operated toll roads to get to work every day,” DeSantis says. “This will end up returning nearly 40 million dollars to SunPass customers over the six-month period.”

In addition, to this discounted toll program, the governor says he plans to have a tax-free gas holiday on October 1st.
