‘Just, boom’: Amazon delivery driver hit by train in Wisconsin grateful he survived

IXONIA, Wis. — An Amazon delivery driver whose truck was struck by a train on Wednesday said he still could not believe he survived.

“Yeah, it just, boom,” Alexander Evans told WISN-TV, adding that the crash occurred on his 33rd birthday.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened at around 1:24 p.m. CST, WDJT reported. The impact of the crash severed Evans’ truck in half.

Evans, of Milwaukee, was the lone occupant in the truck. He was taken to an area hospital for “precautionary measures,” according to the television station.

Evans was driving north, while the train was traveling east.

“I made a look as I was going down the hill to swerve, and I didn’t see anything,” Evans told WISN. “He was on my left side.”

That was crucial since Evans said he is deaf in his left ear and initially did not hear the train’s whistle.

“Literally, it was like one long beep, horn from the train, and I put my foot on the gas, kind of like trying,” Evans told WISN. “I don’t know how far I’m going to get away from him.”

He moved the vehicle far enough to save his life.

There are no signals, lights or warning sounds at the crossing, the television station reported.
