GOLD HILL, N.C. — A North Carolina woman allegedly set fire to the wrong house while she was seeking revenge on one of her ex-boyfriends, officials say.
According to The Associated Press, the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office said that they were called by a Gold Hill, North Carolina homeowner who was woken up last Friday by a neighbor who saw a woman trying to set a fire to their house.
The woman was identified by investigators as Christie Jones, 49, according to WSOC. Investigators said that Jones was allegedly targeting the wrong house in the incident.
When deputies got to the house, they deputies found a wood bundle that was set on fire on the front porch. Along with that, deputies found “a jug of oil” that they believed was used to start the fire, according to the AP. The homeowner tried to put the fire out with the garden hose, which didn’t work because Jones had allegedly used a sealant that deputies said helped to block the water.
According to the AP, the homeowner grabbed a rifle and confronted Jones, who apparently was holding one of his dogs on a leash. She drove off as RCSO and fire crews approached.
WSOC said Jones took the dog with her. RCSO deputies were able to catch up with Jones. She was arrested and booked on recommended charges of felony first-degree arson, assault with a deadly weapon and larceny of an animal. Jones’ bond was set at $101,500, according to WSOC.
The dog was found and the fire was put out before any serious damage occurred, according to WSOC. Investigators believe that the home incurred about $20,000 of damage.
The investigation is ongoing and more charges are possible, according to WSOC.
